Blooms and nature abound along the Connecticut shoreline.
Couldn’t we all use a taste of summer? Warm breezes sifting through marsh grasses; sailboats rocking gently on a quiet cove; a backyard putting green beckoning you to sink a few putts before the sun sets … and, of course, the first blooms springing forth from renewed flower and vegetable beds! All of this and more await visitors to the 2013 Lyme/Old Lyme Garden Tour, which features a half dozenprivate gardens — including an estate on Hamburg Cove, a working farm, an architectural gem overlooking the Connecticut River, and a garden with its own putting green! Tucked away amid the stone walls and rolling hills of the Lyme and Old Lyme countryside, these gardens abound with natural beauty, both flora and fauna. Homeowners nurture vegetables, herbs, perennials, and annuals alongside native trees, shrubs, and marsh grasses; and while deer, osprey, and even the occasional bald eagle are known to frequent this part of the Connecticut River Valley, several of the gardens also feature chickens, horses, and even a koi pond. Each of the six gardens on the Lyme/Old Lyme Garden Tour offers a unique look at gardening along the shoreline in Connecticut, and together they provide a fitting welcome to a long-awaited summer!
Your visit won’t be complete without a delectable boxed lunch catered by Old Lyme’s own Coffee’s Country Market. Enjoy it al fresco, and then treat yourself with a stop at the Garden Boutique, where you’ll find distinctive gifts and furnishings for your garden and your home, including linens, garden accessories, unique jewelry, fresh flowers, original art, and more!
