Essex August Newsletter

Dear Members and Friends,

I do hope you are enjoying the last of “lazy, hazy days of summer,” spending time at the beach with family and friends, savoring fresh corn and the smell of the salt water. I treasured my 2½ weeks with two darling granddaughters and spent time on Block Island. Love them at 13 years old, and not sure what will happen when they turn 14. Will someone please warn me?

This is the Auxiliary time off. So what happened? We had four fundraising events. Ladies you are all amazing and so is Essex for supporting our children.

July 4th the Essex Automobile Club held their annual car show and we provided our enthusiastic volunteers. They said we were “fun, knowledgeable and willing to melt” as it was a hot day. They presented us with a check for $1,200. Thank you to all who helped, and to Terry and Bette Lomme for their coordination and support.

July 15th The Runway Flashback Show rocked and we have the videos to prove it. We love Famah and Greg for all that they create with this fabulous event. The finale was the renewal of their wedding vows after 30 years of marriage. Figures are not final but we raised almost $9,000.00. There is still time to sign up for the ALL White Party on Friday August 31st. Let me know! And it is ALL WHITE!!! Great fun.

July 28th Dede Towers honored her parents Chevy and Hank with a piano concert by Grammy Award winner Fernando Otero in their award winning home, designed by Ulrich Franzen in 1957. Chevy and her dear friend Linda Williams were responsible for creating Child and Family Agency of Southeastern CT as they spun off from Children’s Services in Hartford. Hank created the phrase “Buy a Bargain… Help a Child” for the Annual Sale. It was a beautiful evening and a wonderful honor to some fabulous people. Thanks to Judy Lovelace for bringing us all together.

August 20th “Oh What a Night.” Beebe Miller, our new Auxiliary treasurer and her husband Len who started Sound Waters brought to Essex this beautiful 82’ Schooner. The Schooner is a teaching vessel for children to understand the importance of preserving the Long Island Sound. Please check out their website and we do hope we can engage in something even bigger next year to include children from the Agency. How very generous when the Sound Waters Team offered 100% of the proceeds to Child and Family.

So much for a summer at the beach.!!! You ladies are amazing and it is wonderful that our members continue to bring us new ideas and events.

So here we go! Another year of friends and fundraising.!!! We are always open to new events and love new members. Alice VanDeursen will host a prospective new member meeting on September 11th. How many ladies have you discovered who have the energy and sense of humor it takes to raise over $85,000.00 as we did last year for the Agency. I am so proud to be a part of this wonderful group of women. We are small but we are mighty!

Please remember, while we are raising funds for The Child and Family Agency, we are also taking good care of each other. Life is not easy or pretty sometimes, but we do “get by with a little help from our friends.”

Enjoy these summer days and we will see each other on September 18th for our first monthly meeting of the year. Just imagine what magic we can make in this coming year!!!

Gratefully yours,

Child & Family Agency of Southeastern Connecticut, Inc.
