The Groton Auxiliary’s Charity Bookshop has been a staple in the community since 2000. Offering incredible bargains on hardcover and paperback books, CD’s and DVD’s, it is probably one of the best-kept secrets in our area.
The Charity Bookshop owes its existence to former CEO Tom Gullotta. In 2000, he brought his idea for the shop to members of the Groton Auxiliary. Claire McCarter and Mary Allingham, both active members at the time, took the idea and ran with it. McCarter, a retired bookstore owner, and Allingham, a retired librarian, brought passion and know-how to get the bookshop off the ground.
Today, the bookshop is operated by the Groton Auxiliary and a devoted team of volunteers. These dedicated individuals do everything from processing donated books and organizing shelves, to helping customers and making sales. Books and other items are priced from $0.50 to $5.00. All proceeds from the bookshop go to benefit Child and Family Agency.
The Charity Bookshop is located at 591 Poquonnock Road, in the same plaza as CFA’s Early Childhood Education Center. They are open Wednesday 10AM to 4PM, Thursday 2PM to 5PM, 1st, Thursday of the month 2PM to 7PM, and Saturday 10AM to 1PM. Their fall sale is running from now thru October 6th. All books and other items with blue or green dots are on sale at half-price. Stop in and check out this wonderful shop!
