Acclaimed Author Chris Bohjalian to speak at East Lyme Auxiliary’s Author Luncheon
On October 3,2015, the East Lyme Auxiliary of Child and Family Agency and Bank Square Books of Mystic proudly present, for the third Celebrity Author Luncheon, the bestselling author-Chris Bohjalian.
Mr. Bohjalian has had ten New York Times bestsellers. His work has been translated into roughly 30 languages and has been made into three movies. His books have been chosen as Best Books of the Year by The Washington Post, The St. Louis Post-Dispatch, The Hartford Courant, The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Publishers Weekly, Library Journal, Kirkus Reviews, Bookpage, and Salon.
He now lives in Lincoln, Vermont with his wife, the photographer Victoria Blewer. When he was asked about “finding his voice”, he said, “For me, it was in Vermont that I discovered issues, things that matter to me”. He has been inspired by the ordinary people of his experience, as they face difficult situations and unforeseen challenges, with many of his novels taking place in fictional Vermont towns.
His historical novels focus on varied time periods from the Armenian genocide to World War II. In his contemporary novels he has plumbed social issues such has homelessness, domestic violence, environmentalism, and animal rights. His daughter, Grace Experience, a young actor in New York City, once told him, “Dad, please take this as a compliment, because I mean it that way: Your sweet spot as a novelist is seriously messed up young women.” He agreed with her.
The event, at the Community Center in East Lyme, will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. In addition to the presentation by Mr. Bohjalian, there will be a Luncheon catered by Best of Everything Country Gourmet of Niantic and desserts made by members of the Auxiliary. There will also be a book signing and Basket Raffle.
Tickets for the Luncheon, which will include a choice of one of five of his paperback novels, will be $35 in advance and $40 at the door. All profits from the event will support the Child and Family Agency in their many projects to assist children and families in need of services in mental health and physical healthcare, child abuse prevention, the treatment of family violence, teen pregnancy, childcare, children’s safety and accident prevention, and parent education
