Our 64th Annual Sale

CFA’s Annual Sale is the largest and longest running event of its kind in New England.
Two hundred and sixty Child & Family Agency volunteers are gearing up for the 64th Annual Sale, to be held this year at the New London Armory, 249 Bayonet Street in New London, CT. CFA’s six different shoreline Auxiliaries hold close to 30 fundraisers a year. The Annual Sale is the big one, the one when all six come together for what has become the largest tag sale in Connecticut.
The History: In 1954 a group of women organized Child & Family Agency’s first Annual Sale at the Skipper’s Dock in Noank. The building had been vacant with no heat but a group of volunteers made fast friendships while organizing clothes and kitchenware to raise money for children in need. In the years to follow, the sale would be held in vacant storefronts in New London and Groton, the gyms at St. Bernard’s and Grasso Tech, as well as Mitchell College, Ocean Beach and the New London Armory. While the locations may change, the friendships, fun, and commitment of the auxiliary volunteers have remained constant during the sixty three years of supporting the children served by Child & Family Agency of Southeastern Connecticut.
The Collecting: It begins the week before, with six days of “Intake” where our generous community members drop off their gently used items at six locations along the CT coastline from Mystic down to Essex. Auxiliary volunteers will be standing by to greet and assist with your donated items. “Bring the best, leave the rest” advised Mary Dangremond, a co-chair of this fundraiser for more than a decade. “As a guide we ask our patrons to please donate only items they would consider purchasing for themselves, their best friend, children or grandchildren.” She added, “Those who donate know their goods are going to a good cause.” The volunteers will collect, sort, box and then transport your contributions to the New London Armory for this bonanza, 3-day fundraiser. Tax donation letters are available on site, and specialty art or jewelry items will be appreciated and handled with care.

The Foraging: This is where the real fun happens! It takes 260 volunteers to pull off this extraordinary tag sale. The co-chairs of the 2018 Annual Sale are Amanda Rutledge, Lois Geary, Ellie Krusewski, and Mary Dangremond. Some of our very faithful volunteers have been working this important Child & Family Agency fundraiser for over 40 years. By opening day, they know all the goods in their departments and are ready to help shoppers find just what they’re looking for. Last year 130 tables and 40 clothing racks were needed to display the art, collectables, housewares, linens, small appliances, sporting goods, books, toys, jewelry and clothing, and an extensive furniture department of tables, chairs, bed frames, dressers, shelves and lamps. People who shop the sale return year after year because of the values to be had. Treasures to be discovered range from current, stylish fashions and accessories (including designer labels) to fine furniture and antiques, linens in excellent condition, an entire room devoted to jewelry, another room full of books and art, and yet another filled with the best “boutique” items of china, stemware, silver and decorative items. Children love searching through the multitude of puzzles, games and toys. Don’t forget to seek out the “man cave” of men’s wear, tools and sporting equipment. Shoppers appreciate the quality of the items and return each year to find a treasure, which in turn will help a child. “We get high quality items because we have been doing this sale for so many years,” says Mary Dangremond. These “quality” donations help to provide for an increasingly successful fund raiser.
The Benefit: Your collective donations make a difference every year in the lives of the children and families served, but in times of economic turmoil your support is crucial, helping to stabilize some very fragile lives. Proceeds from the sale go directly to support the many extraordinary services provided by Child & Family Agency, a non-profit organization which has served Connecticut families for over 200 years. While items sell well below retail value, the money raised for Child and Family Agency helps to provide services to over 18,000 children and their families in our communities. Last year’s sale netted over $60,000 of unrestricted funding to support agency programs provided by a staff of 195 dedicated professionals.
