A Parent’s Thank You Letter to the New London Day Nursery

I’m a single mom of one little girl. I’ve been lucky enough to have her attend the New London Day Nursery (a program of Child and Family Agency) since she was about 4 months old. I remember the first day I dropped her off. Handing my tiny little baby to the infant teacher and feeling that still familiar “mom guilt” of wanting to be with my baby and, at the same time, needing and wanting to work. Since that day, I have never felt like I could say or do enough to thank the incredible teachers who work with my girl, and 50 other children between the ages of 6 weeks and 5 years, every day. So I will try here…
Thank you for caring for the infants, toddlers, and preschoolers who need a safe place to be so their parents can work or go to school.
Thank you for teaching colors and numbers and letters and stacking and sorting and all of the other concepts that form the foundation of all learning.
Thank you for patiently waiting while shoes are pulled off and put back on, hands are washed, and teeth are brushed – all very slowly!
Thank you for teaching the children how to hold a pencil and use a pair of scissors.
Thank you for cleaning up the messes – toys and paint and milk spilled from the tiny little hands that are just learning how to pour.
Thank you for gently and kindly teaching children how to share and patiently redirecting them as they learn to resolve conflicts – skills which adults still struggle with daily.
Thank you for guiding these tiny humans through the stages of teething, biting, and potty training, and all of the tears and struggles that come along with each.
Thank you for doing so much more than just feeding and meeting my child’s basic needs – thank you for meeting the needs of her soul.
Thank you for speaking to my own child in such loving, kind tones that when she “plays school” at home she never raises her voice.
Thank you for loving and cherishing my child during the hours I can’t be with her.
And thank you for giving your time and love to a job that is not always easy, is rarely recognized, and is one of the most important in the world.
My daughter and I, and the countless of other children and families you give your best selves to… Thank You.
The New London Day Nursery and the Early Childhood Development Center, located in New London and Groton respectively, are currently accepting applications for their preschool programs (ages 3-5).
